At Mount Beauty Primary School we are committed to building a positive school community that fosters respectful relationships and creates a sense of belonging, safety and inclusion for all our students and their families. To support our commitment, a range of programs that promote positive relationships and values, and teach children skills for good mental health and social and emotional development, are implemented from Prep to Year 6.
Teachers at Mount Beauty Primary School use the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships and Grow Your Mind resources which focus on teaching young people the skills to help them respond positively to the complexity of their everyday lives.
Some of our other programs and approaches used to support our students’ wellbeing are:
Circle Time
Circle Time is a whole-class, inclusive, democratic approach for developing and sharing social skills, and creates an open forum for considering issues that affect the class or school community. The aim of Circle Time is to foster the development of positive relationships, self-discipline, conflict resolution skills, assertive communication and democratic group processes.
Restorative Practice
Restorative Practice in schools is an effective conflict resolution strategy that assists teachers and students to build, maintain and restore relationships affected by anti-social or poor behaviours. It does this by bringing about a sense of remorse and restorative action on the part of the offender and forgiveness by the victim. Restorative Practice strategies can be used in a range of situations, from resolving minor conflict arising from play, to addressing bullying issues.
Buddies
Our Buddies Program enables students to make connections with students from other year levels in the school. The focus is on building healthy and positive relationships with older and younger peers to create strong support networks across the school. Prep and Year 6 students are partnered to share a range of experiences and activities over the year. This program supports Prep transition with Prep students feeling safe and cared for, and Year 6 students feeling valued and respected. Other students in the school have many opportunities to work regularly with students in other year levels as ‘buddies’, helping to create and maintain these connections.
Student Leadership
Students are provided many opportunities to develop their leadership skills throughout their primary schooling. The Student Representative Council (SRC) provides a formal experience for children to demonstrate and develop leadership attributes and values. SRC members are elected from each class for the year. Their responsibilities include discussing student needs or issues arising from consultation with their peers, presenting proposals to school staff or School Council to address student needs and issues, coordinating charity fundraising events, and leading weekly assemblies highlighting school values and personal virtues. SRC members meet weekly with the SRC coordinator who helps facilitate their projects. SRC members may also represent the school at various ceremonies and occasions.
Curriculum
Health and wellbeing is also embedded in our curriculum. Classes undertake a range of age-appropriate learning experiences that address allergy, road, water and cyber safety, sexuality and drug education, healthy eating and healthy living choices. These curriculum areas provide students with the knowledge, skills and behaviours necessary for the pursuit of lifelong involvement in physical activity, health and wellbeing.
A range of Student Support Services provided by education and health professionals are also available to our students to support their wellbeing and educational outcomes.
